Eccentric Billionaire Buried His Bentley To Prove A Point
Today most people, to prove a point, simply take to their keyboards and type out heavy statements and hope that their message is impactful. Not everybody has it in them to physically perform a stunt in hopes of making an impact. Not everybody, that is to say, can be as stouthearted as Thane Chiquinho Scarpa, one of the most affluent men in Brazil.
Thane Chiquinho Scarpa said that a visit to Egypt inspired him to bury his Bentley Flying Spur so that he could enjoy it in the afterlife. Scarpa took a photo standing next to his Bentley and posted it on social media, saying, “I decided to do as the Pharaohs: this week I will bury my favourite car, the Bentley here in the home garden!”
He faced tons of backlash on his social media post with people besieging him with insults, saying that what he was doing was unethical and wasteful. People asked him whether he was really burying his car to avoid paying taxes on it.
Despite the backwash that his post generated, he continued to post his plans for the burial throughout the week and even went ahead and sent out invites to his burial-party. While Scarpa is famous for engaging in several controversies, especially with revolving around his various ex-wives, this was a first for any person in-touch-with-reality. Did he really believe his Bentley would be present for him to enjoy in his afterlife if he buried it?
Well he wasn’t all that delusional after all. During the ceremony, right before his car was lowered into the hole in the ground, he stopped the procession and revealed the genuine motive behind the whole charade: He wanted to create awareness towards organ donation and implore people to sign up for it.
“People condemn me because I wanted to bury a million dollar Bentley, in fact most people bury something a lot more valuable than my car,” Scarpa said in his impassioned speech. “They bury hearts, livers, lungs, eyes, kidneys. This is absurd. There are so many people out there waiting for a transplant and you will bury healthy organs that can save so many lives. This is the biggest waste in the world. My Bentley is worthless in comparison to life giving organs.”
Scarpa then went on to announce that he himself had signed up for organ donation and asked people to exhort their family and loved ones to sign up for organ donation as well.
In the U.S. alone, an estimated 21 patients die every day because of the lack of organ donors. In India, the number is almost so much steeper. Nearly 500,000 people die of not having access to organs in India every year. 150,000 people await a kidney transplant in India but only 5,000 are able to eventually get one. Despite these numbers, less than a thousand transplants from deceased donors are performed each year in India. This number is incredibly small and insignificant compared to the statistics from around the world.
A lot of people believe that they are unsuitable for organ donation because they are too young, too old or not healthy enough. Very few medical conditions actually automatically disqualify someone from donating organs. While certain organs might not suitable for transplantation because of age or a medical condition, organs and tissues may be fine. One shouldn’t prematurely disqualify themselves.
Some people have concerns that their organs might be taken from them before actual confirmation of death. In India, a panel consisting of 4 doctors perform a series of exhaustive tests – Cornea reflex test, Ear reflex test, Gag reflex test and Aphena reflex test – which are repeated twice in a time frame of six hours. Only then can the panel declare you brain dead, after which your organs can be used. The panel must include the medical administrator in charge of the hospital, an authorized specialist, a neurologist or a neuro-surgeon and the medical officer treating the patient.

It is a worthwhile and noble act to donate organs, which would otherwise pass with you, that might help save lives. Many families even say that knowing their loved one helped save other lives helped them cope with their loss. You can register your decision to donate and get your donor card here. Thank you Mr. Scarpa for taking a strong stand on this one! Flutur stands with you!
