Khullam Khulla: Complicated Stories from Rishi Kapoor's Life
After a two year long battle with leukemia, Rishi Kapoor breathed his last breath on 30th April 2020. The country is still reeling from the loss of an illustrious actor. However, Rishi Kapoor's life was far from vanilla - his life was wrought with complications and difficult relationships, especially during the last few years of his life, with a lot of active controversies on Twitter.
His love life
Rishi Kapoor was head over heels for a girl but, it wasn’t his wife, Neetu Singh. Yep, you read it right. Kapoor was madly in love with a Parsi girl called Yasmin Mehta and had dated her since before ‘Bobby’ was released. After the release of ‘Bobby’, a lot of magazines started romantically linking both the leads of the movie, Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia. Dimple Kapadia was married to Rajesh Khanna at the time (a relationship wrought with its own complications), so these rumours were easy enough for her to dismiss. Much to the dismay of Rishi Kapoor, however, these paparazzi reports resulted in the breaking apart of his relationship with Yasmin. Despite a lot of efforts, Kapoor failed to bring her back into his life.
Relationship with his wife, Neetu Kapoor
Though the couple had a great on-screen chemistry, there were a lot of problems in their domestic life, which they were unable to hide from the world. ‘Bobby’ was a huge hit and with its success, Kapoor’s expectation from his films touched an all-time high. After a series of flops, Rishi Kapoor began suffering from depression. He started to blame his wife for his condition while she was pregnant with their first child, Ridhima Kapoor. This affected their relationship adversely. The actor also confessed to have almost rejected ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ before marriage, since his wife had a more prominent role in the movie. He finally accepted the role at the behest of his uncle, Shashi Kapoor. If rumours are to be believed, the scuffle between the couple was majorly because of his drinking habits. There were rumours of the couple living separately and Neetu Singh filing a complaint against Rishi Kapoor for abuse. The couple however, later denied that anything of the kind ever transpired.
A cold war with Amitabh Bachchan
Rishi Kapoor and Bollywood's superstar, Amitabh Bachchan were seen together on screen in the movie ‘Kabhi Kabhie’. The cold war between the actors began when Rishi Kapoor won the best actor award for ‘Bobby’ which released in the same year as ‘Zanjeer’. Rishi Kapoor said that he was quite sure that Amitabh Bachchan was expecting the award for ‘Zanjeer’ and rightly so, as his performance in the movie was critically acclaimed and well received. Kapoor, in his memoir, Khullam Khullar, later revealed that he 'purchased' the award that year to stop it from going to Bachchan.
Father-son relationship or a formality?
It's difficult to really unpack the complex dynamics between the father son duo, Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. In an interview, Ranbir openly accepted that his relationship with his father, was a 'formality'. Rishi Kapoor has also acknowledged the fact, stating that he believed there was 'a wall' between the two and he did not know how to talk to his son. Allegedly, Rishi Kapoor did not approve of the choices Ranbir Kapoor made, whether it be in movies or in women. If one is to go by the prevalent rumours, Ranbir has also gone on to say that he desires to be closer to his children than his father is to them.
Addiction to alcohol
Rishi Kapoor became an alcoholic after a downfall in his career. He's admitted as much in interviews. His drinking habits became a huge concern for the family. Neetu, in an interview, accepted that she was quite upset with the ill habits of her husband. She continued, revealing that he usually lost his temper and has even tried to raise his hand on her under the influence. She went on to say that he would not listen to anybody in such a state. There have been rumours in the past of the couple being separated due to Rishi Kapoor’s addiction to alcohol, but the couple has denied these suggestions.
